The Friday Quiz – #2

Levant is a name used to refer to the area around Syria and its neighbouring countries. Countries in this region are Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and Syria. Palestine too is a part of this region.

Historically, it has been referred to as Canaan in the Bible, and by the Arabic name Shaam later on. Shaam incidentally also is used to refer to Syria now, a fact that has led to a certain organisation being referred to by two names.

Give both names of the organisation.

The answer is ISIS/ISIL. The Arabic name is ad-Dawlah al-Islamiyah fil Iraq wa ash-Sham. The first three names get translated into Islamic State of Iraq. Sham is either Syria or Levant, thus ISIS/ISIL.
